I'm sure by now you've all heard that HBO is planning to air an episode of "Big Love" that is going to feature a portrayal of the temple ceremony. Honestly my first thought was, "Someone's goin' to Hell." Aside from being dis-respectful, dishonest, ignorant and insensitive the producers, writers, directors, executives and consultants of HBO have put their souls in mortal danger. They are doing this to stir up controversy, to spark the intrests of curious bystanders and wannabe sophistocates who confuse contravercial plot matter with real artistic achievement. They know abosolutely that what they are about to do is going to offend millions of people, what they don't understand is why. They do not - indeed they cannot - fully comprehend the consequences this will have for them. That is why I have chosen not to write to HBO expressing my opinions. The producers, writers and directors of "Big Love" know that if they have stirred up protest they have done their job. That is all they do know.
I assure all of my readers (yes both of you) that I am just as shocked, horrified and disgusted as any of you. But I realize now that more than just LDS people will be offended by this week's episode of "Big Love." By airing this episode "Big Love" is "jumping the shark" as they say in show business. I won't be surprised if they aren't renewed next season. I believe that well-informed and sensitive Americans will abandon "Big Love" for it's display of calousness. After all, bad deeds do not go unpunished; Mosouri suffered worse (economically speaking) than any other state during the Civil War, and you and I know why.
The show is going to sink or swim no matter what I say to HBO (if they cared what I thought they'd make more episodes of Horatio Hornblower), so I have decided not to fan the flames of the fire they hope to start. Besides, there will come a day when the men who engineered this calous display will realize the full horror of their actions and lament them pitifully and that's good enough for me. In the meantime our best protest is to keep moving the church forward.
If you would like to read the churches official statement on this here's the link. I assure you it's quite fortifying. You'll have to copy this into your browser since I don't know how to embed it in the post so you can click on it.
